1. Pannage Pork: A Time-Honoured Tradition

Pannage, derived from the Old French word “pannage,” refers to the practice of allowing domestic pigs to roam freely in the New Forest during a specific season. This tradition dates back to the time of William the Conqueror and is still very much alive today. Pannage, which typically takes place from September to November, whereby the Pigs are turned out onto the forest to hoover up the acorns & beech mast. The acorns are poisonous to the ponies and cattle but the pigs love them. These pigs are completely free, and roam wherever they like. The benefitting result is Pork with the most incredible flavour and texture.

Pannage Pork is seasonal, normally ready in late Autumn, it’s a real item on your bucket list for foodies.
